I. What Is knowledge?
- Webster defines as
- The fact or condition of knowing something with familiarity gained through experience or association
- acquaintance with or understanding of a science, art, or technique
- BDB/Thayer defines as
- 1108 gnosis - knowledge 28, science 1; 29
- knowledge signifies in general intelligence, understanding
- the general knowledge of Christian religion; esp. of things lawful and unlawful for Christians
- the deeper more perfect and enlarged knowledge of this religion, such as belongs to the more advanced
- moral wisdom, such as is seen in right living
- Bible defines as
- Prov 1:7
- The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
- A practical definition for us would be
- Understanding the commands God has given us
- That which allows us to know God
II. Why do we need knowledge?
- In our relationship with God
- Knowledge needed to be saved Jhn 6:44-45; 9:32
- Make a new covenant Jer 31:31-34
- Better covenant better promises Heb 8:6-8
- This is why He commanded the Gospel preached
- Mt 28:18-20; Mk 16:15-16
- 1Cor 1:21; Rom 10:13-17
- Is commanded 2Pet 1:5; 3:18
- Be not unwise but understand Eph 5:17
- In our relationship with our brethren
- We must know enough to avoid being a stumbling block 1Cor 8:1-9
- Must know what and when to do things
- In our relationship with alien sinners
- Must know how to show God to sinners 2Cor 2:14
- We are to teach all nations Mt 28:19-20
III. How do we get or develop knowledge?
- Must learn from Jesus Col 2:3; 2Cor 4:6; Mt 11:29
- Gain knowledge by study
- Study (be diligent) to show approved 2Tim 2:15
- Bereans Acts 17:11
- Truth in Scriptures Jhn 8:32; 17:17
IV. What is the result of strengthening our knowledge?
- Made free from sins Jhn 8:32
- Escape the pollutions of world 2Pet 2:20
- Remain steadfast 2Pet 1:10; 3:17-18
- Able to teach others 2Tim 2:2
- Save ourselves and family
- Without knowledge we will
- Be destroyed Hosea 4:6
- Cause others to be lost today Rom 10:1-3
- Lack of knowledge reason for many fallen Christians today
- Apollos' lack of complete knowledge could have caused many to be lost Acts 18:24-28
- Without knowledge, faith and virtue will be useless
- Knowledge is necessary for faith Rom 10:17; Jhn 8:32
- Cannot stand upright if we don't know what is right.
